KINGS OF BACHATA: SOLD OUT AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN is a triumphant homecoming for New York City natives Aventura. Formed in the Bronx with the intent of infusing Dominican bachata with the sounds of contemporary American R&B, Aventura released their first album in 1999, and built their following steadily but surely over subsequent releases. This 2007 two-disc live release, which finds the group playing to a sold-out crowd, is an enjoyable sampler of their smooth, tropical flavor (Aventura fall more on the...

Reunion: Live at Madison Square Garden 1972 by Dion & The Belmonts
Dion & The Belmonts: Dion DiMucci, Carlo Mastrangelo, Angelo D'Aleo, Fred Milano (vocals). Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York on June 2, 1972. Includes liner notes by Stan Becker. Digitally remastered by Bill Inglot and Ken Perry. 1972 was a big rock revival year--Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, and Rick Nelson all had Top 10 hits, just like the old days. However, for many first generation rock fans, the real event of the year was the June 2nd reunion of the world's greatest doo-wop group at New York's Madison Square Garden. This document of the concert shows why--the group's unparalleled mix of macho swagger and romantic delicacy proved totally undimmed by the passage of time. Dion, perhaps the most criminally underrated white rock singer of all time, is in particularly fine form here, rephrasing each familiar song with the virtuosity of a jazz musician (and his scatting on "Little Diane" makes that connection explicit), and decades later, the whole thing still seems fresh as paint.

Live From Madison Square Garden by O.A.R.
O.A.R.: Marc Roberge (acoustic guitar); Jerry Depizzo (electric guitar); Benj Gershman (bass guitar); Chris Culos (drums); Richard On (background vocals). Additional personnel: Mikel Paris (background vocals). Issued in 2007, LIVE FROM MADISON SQUARE GARDEN presents the massively popular Maryland frat/jam band O.A.R. (Of a Revolution) performing at the renowned New York City venue in front of thousands of adoring fans. While the reggae-leaning pop/rock group offers up some older material (the buoyant long-time favorite "That Was a Crazy Game of Joker"), the set mainly finds them drawing from later major-label outings IN BETWEEN NOW AND THEN ('03) and STORIES OF A STRANGER ('06) on tracks such as the sunny "Hey Girl" and the groove-laden "52-50." A testament to both the ensemble's tight instrumental interplay and frontman Marc Roberge's inviting guy-next-door persona, this concert album serves as an excellent song sampler for the uninitiated, and is essential for any O.A.R. diehard.

At Madison Square Garden by Johnny Cash
Originally recorded in 1969, AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN has been previously unreleased. Personnel: Johnny Cash (vocals, acoustic guitar); Tommy Cash (spoken vocals, acoustic guitar); Carl Perkins (vocals, electric guitar); The Carter Family (vocals, guitar); The Statler Brothers (vocals); Bob Wootton (electric guitar); Marshall Grant (bass); W.S. Holland (drums). Recorded live at Madison Garden Square Garden, New York, New York on December 5, 1969. Includes liner notes by Lou Robin and Allen Tinkley. All tracks have been digitally remastered. This 1969 concert recording fits nicely alongside Johnny Cash's live outings AT FOLSOM PRISON and AT SAN QUENTIN to create a mighty triumvirate. Capturing Cash at the peak of his commercial popularity before a sold-out New York audience, and featuring a full band that includes Carl Perkins, the Statler Brothers, and the Carter Family, AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN stands in sharp contrast to Cash's bare-bones prison concerts. But the proof, as Cash invariably proves, is in...

Elvis as Recorded at Madison Square Garden by Elvis Presley
Personnel: Elvis Presley (vocals); James Burton, John Wilkinson (guitar); Charlie Hodge (guitar, vocals); Glen Hardin (piano);Jerry Scheff (bass); Ronnie Tutt (drums); J.D. Sumner & The Stamps, The Sweet Inspiriations, Kathy Westmoreland (background vocals). Reissue producer: Chick Crumpacker. Recorded live at Madison Square Garden, New York on June 10, 1972. Digitally remastered by Dick Baxter (November, 1991, BMG Recording Studios, New York). In June 1972, Elvis Presley returned to New York City for his first performances there since his final appearance on Ed Sullivan's "Talk of the Town" more than 15 years earlier. His shows at Madison Square Garden were, in fact, his first full concerts in New York: during previous visits to the Big Apple, Presley had only performed a few numbers in television studios. Accordingly, Presley's four shows at Madison Square Garden were huge media events. As part of the pre-concert hype, RCA announced that it would release a live album of the concerts one week after the ...

Live Madison Square Garden New Year's Eve 1995 by Phish
Phish: Trey Anastasio (vocals, guitar, percussion); Page McConnell (vocals, keyboards); Mike Gordon (vocals, bass guitar); Jon Fishman (vocals, drums). Recording information: Madison Square Garden, New York, New York (1995). Although year-ending concerts were nothing new for Phish by 1995, this New Year's Eve live set at New York City's Madison Square Garden proved to be especially significant for the group, since it revealed the Vermont-based jam band as an amiable musical giant that had reached new heights of popularity in the preceding months. The ensemble is in peak form throughout the three discs, particularly when indulging in extended improvisational outings such as the much loved and thoroughly silly "Reba" and "The Squirming Coil," an absurdist narrative that allows for plenty of jazzy solos by guitarist/frontman Trey Anastasio and keyboardist Page McConnell. Though most of the tunes are Phish originals, the band also carries over two Who songs (the rocked-out "Drowned" and the melancholy "Sea a...

Sierra (piano); Carlos Vargas (keyboards); Luis 'Gato' Coss (bass guitar); Carlos Maldonado (congas); Carmelo Alvarez (bongos); Santiago Martinez (percussion); Jose Luis Ramos, David Carrero (background vocals). Additional personnel: Don Omar, Eddie Palmieri, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Sin Bandera. Puerto Rican-American salsa singer Victor Manuelle turns in a charismatic performance on his 2007 LIVE AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN release. Unlike many of his Latin music contemporaries, Manuelle rarely ventures into pop or English language material, preferring to stay true to his salsa roots. His forte is romantic material, a choice perfectly suited to his rich, warm voice, and there is no shortage of love songs on this riveting set. Backed by a full band, Manuelle is in fine form on this set, making LIVE an excellent purchase for both fans and newcomers.
